Polmont scarecrow comp - for Halloweens Samhain or ‘All Hallows Day’

Image
Scarecrow competition This year I have joined the local community council, as a member at a meeting a few months back, I discovered that the community were going to have a scarecrow competition for Halloween in the village, I possibly wouldn’t have entered the competition had I not been part of the council - but when the event was discussed by the convener, I grew to really like the idea and decided to embrace it – correctly thinking this could be a great thing for our community, I had lots and lots of great ideas about what to make my scarecrow out of and into, from being a cyclist or a politician, In the end I opted to make a skiing scarecrow, I have a very old pair of skis and ski boots, I used these along with an old helmet to put over a screaming mask, stuffing some hay into old work waterproofs, I thought he looked great, I had an old tarp from a motorhome awning and some rotting wood, that I turned into a ski slope for the skier, who I later nicknamed the screaming ea...

tickets for kendal 23

Tickets for KMF time 2023 I love the Kendal mountain film festival, I have been going to it for years - last year was the first year I attended whilst being a member of the green runners community, I learn a lot about the great outdoors at this annual festival weekend, I am massive on personal pledges so much so – that I wrote a book about personal pledges = personal growth, I shelved that writing project five years ago so; it’s not published yet! but perhaps that’s fate! As it was a story of my journey how I became the changes we need to see in this world, that story is why the green runners four pillars are easy for me, back then it was a personal journey that led to me losing faith in humanity and feeling alone, because none of us can do this on our own, we need system change in our communities our governments and worldwide, a fun example of how my personal pledges go - is that last year, I pledged to run everyday in 2022, which I successfully completed, it was a fantast...

Is a marathon event a festival?

Image
Manchester marathon It’s been a long time since I have run a road marathon, it’s no longer my thing! Trail is where it’s at for me now, I’ve ran plenty half marathons and 10k fun runs on roads, most of my runs of any distance have been on trails for the past fifteen years, last year I went down to support a friend in the London marathon, so; I have of late tasted the atmosphere and scale of a big city marathon, But; on the 16th of April 2023 I would be taking part in the biggest mass participation event I have ever taken part in, Manchester is the 2nd biggest in the UK the fourth biggest in Europe with an average of twenty eight thousand runners The run was a Sunday morning - there was no way of getting a train in to the start point from outside the city - to get to the start line on time that I could see, If I was to avoid car travel? I would have to either get a city center hotel - or be near a tram station on the morning of the event, I chose Altrincham station where there wer...

damians book at KMBF

Kendal mountain book festival How do you identify yourself? Are you a runner? If so what sort of runner - distance terrain speed? A cyclist? Again, distance speed terrain even more types of cyclists than runners! A swimmer? Sea swimmer? Loch/lake, pool, river, a climber? A hiker? A canoeist a skier an environmentalist? Activist, conservationist, an outdoors enthusiast? Forest bathing, trig bagging summit fever box ticker? A music fan? A reader? A writer? I can identify myself as all of these and more, this is why I love the KMF it tries to cover all these things I love, the KMBF covers all these and more also It’s the reader and writer part of me that I wish to focus on for my Kendal Mountain book festival write up here, this is a part of the festival that I nearly always sadly neglect (or do least off), I wish to increase this in the future, but: can I? with the festival schedule already so overwhelmingly full, how much more time can I give to any of my passions? (there’s always ti...

day four Sunday the end

Image
Sunday last festival day, As usual I found it hard to get out of bed; which made it a rush to get to the first film of the day, which turned out to be a set of three films sponsored by Adidas, the first of which which was called united by summits, I did enjoy this film it was all about various sponsored athletes for Adidas, a portrayal of each of them and sometimes film footage from events and the sponsored athletes villages, it was all very well filmed documentary style, which; had it been the previous day I would have really enjoyed, but; the aggressive advertising of Adidas products was starting to annoy me! all of these athletes were wearing shiny new kit and being professionally filmed showing them even pulling on shiny white running socks with the company logo centre stage, I have read the triathlete Chrissie Wellington’s biography so; I have an understanding of how at the top level, being a sponsored athlete gives a huge advantage, the general public forget that it’s the perso...
